The three-year collaborative project “Offshore Wind Energy – Protection and Security” (OWiSS) presented its joint results during a symposium at the University of Applied Sciences Bremerhaven/Germany on Wednesday, November 8, 2017.
Carsten Kassen participated as Deutsche Offshore Consult representative with a speech on “Parameters of cable laying – A contribution to operational safety” in front of about 50 interested participants.
Since January 2015 and within the BMBF funding programme “Forschung für die zivile Sicherheit” (research for civil security) and the announcement of “maritime security” possible security related shortcomings (such as failures/weak points) in offshore wind farms has been analyzed as well as their potential impact on the energy supply. Key element of the research project is the operational phase of an offshore wind farm including all relevant subsystems such as sub or converter station as well as cable connections, possible hazards and threats to related processes and structures as well as preventive and counter actions, e.g. in management and communication systems.
DOC with its longstanding offshore experience realizes the interface towards practical application within the project “Offshore Wind Energy – Protection and Security” (OWiSS). Aside from the DOC the Fraunhofer Insitute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials (IFAM) and the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) are involved in the project. Furthermore, the University of Applied Sciences Bremerhaven participates with two institutes – the fk-wind Institute for Wind Energy and the Institute for Safety and Security Studies (ISaSS) as well.
The joint project has been running for three years until December 2017. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research funded it with about 2.5 Mio. Euros within the “Research for civil security” program.
